Safeguarding Communities: SGLG-IF riverbank project turn-over in Pigcawayan, Cotabato

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region XII witnessed the turnover of a riverbank protection project - a Gabion Wire Mesh, on September 11, 2024, at Barangay Balogo, Pigcawayan, Cotabato Province. The project was funded under the 2023 Seal of Good Local Governance Incentive Fund (SGLG-IF)  worth Php 1.8 million.

The turnover ceremony was attended by Pigcawayan Municipal Mayor Juanito C. Agustin and Balogo Punong Barangay Edgar Castillo. Also present were personnel from DILG XII, represented by Engr. Hermina S. Ontoy, Chief of the Project Development Management Unit (PDMU) and LGOO VI  Jesus Remus F. Laguting, Antipas’ Municipal Local Government Operations Officer (MLGOO).

The area has been facing significant erosion along the riverbanks, which has led to the destruction of homes and farmland. The construction of the riverbank protection aims to mitigate flooding risks, including the formation of sandbars that could undermine structures. This initiative is expected to safeguard residential and agricultural areas in Balogo and neighboring communities from further damage. The project will directly benefit 360 residents, including local farmers.
