DILG JOINS 2ND QUARTER REGIONAL TOBACCO CONTROL NETWORK MEETING

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) actively participated in the 2nd Quarter Regional Tobacco Control Network (RTCN) meeting at Agua Frio Resort, Koronadal City, South Cotabato last June 11, 2024.

Hosted by the Department of Health - Center for Health and Development (DOH CHD) SOCCSKSARGEN Region, the activity saw attendance from various line agencies committed to strengthening tobacco control measures in the region. DILG XII was represented by Development Management Officer III Ana Louwel V. Cabrido of the Local Government Capability and Development Division.

The DOH, through its Health Education and Promotion Officer (HEPO), indicated that they are awaiting national guidelines to ensure the sustainability of Regional Operations against smoking and tobacco use (ROA). These guidelines will provide a strategic framework for ongoing and future initiatives to combat tobacco use. Detailed statistics on illicit tobacco were presented, revealing an alarming increase in the production and distribution of counterfeit and unregulated tobacco products.

A comprehensive region-wide "Operation Baklas" was discussed, focusing on enforcing local ordinances by removing illegal tobacco advertisements and ensuring compliance with established laws. This operation aims to eliminate unauthorized promotional materials that contribute to the normalization and appeal of tobacco use.

Cabrido emphasized the DILG's support for these initiatives, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts among various government agencies.

“The DILG remains committed to working with the DOH and other stakeholders to enforce tobacco control measures effectively. Our joint efforts are crucial in safeguarding public health and reducing the prevalence of tobacco-related diseases," Cabrido stated during the forum.

The RTCN meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all participants to prioritize the implementation of amended ordinances, intensify efforts against illicit tobacco, and prepare for the upcoming national guidelines. The shared determination and collaborative spirit at the meeting set a promising path forward for enhanced tobacco control in the region.
